Description:

[An Intimate Interpretation at the Mantua Court Chapel: Exploring Monteverdi’s Sources of Inspiration] In 1610, shortly before Monteverdi—a master of the early Baroque—took up his post as Kapellmeister at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice and began to exert his immense influence, he published a collection of works that could be described as the culmination of his church music techniques. Included in this collection was the music for Vespers, known today as *Vespers of the Blessed Virgin Mary*. At the time, the composer was still in Mantua, northern Italy, and it is believed that the majority of this collection was written for the private devotions of the Gonzaga family. In approaching this masterpiece, the French early music ensemble In Alto chose to record at the Basilica of Saint Barbara in Mantua—where Monteverdi once worked—in order to return to the composer’s original vision at the time of composition. Envisioning a musical service for the Feast of the Assumption at the Mantua court in the late 16th century, the ensemble thoroughly reexamined the order of the pieces and their interpretation, revealing the true charm of this work through the intimate sound that cultured connoisseurs would have savored in private gatherings. The Gregorian chants, which were sung before and after each piece at the time, were also carefully selected from the collection of antiphons preserved at the church in Mantua. The album opens and closes with works by 16th-century Italian masters, creating a structure that presents these works not so much as the origins of the Baroque, but rather as “new horizons sprouting from the Renaissance.” By limiting each part to four performers or fewer (with most vocal parts featuring just two singers), the ensemble creates a chamber-music-like interplay between instruments and voices at just the right distance—a masterful interpretation reminiscent of late Renaissance chamber music and ensemble singing that is thoroughly rewarding to listen to. The enveloping mid-to-low-range resonance created by instruments such as the trombone and violone is also deeply satisfying, and the comprehensive liner notes—which include comments from the performers and are available in English, French, and German—will serve as a valuable reference for listeners.
