Peter Gast is a German composer. His real name is Johann Heinrich Köselitz, and he was a pupil and friend of Friedrich Nietzsche. Born in Amberg, Saxony, he studied music at the University of Leipzig before going on to the University of Basel, where he established a friendship with Nietzsche. And when Nietzsche's eyesight deteriorated, he read for him, dictated to him, and helped him prepare all of Nietzsche's works, playing a particularly important role in the creation of "Human, Too Human". Kaselitz was also a gifted composer, and the pen name "Peter Gust" was given to him by Nietzsche. However, his works were kept under tight seals in communist East Germany for half a century and were not performed until recently. Many of the songs on this album are in the German Romantic Lied tradition, with themes of love, life, spring, drink, and youthful passion. Inheriting the German Romantic Lieder tradition, Nietzsche appreciated these brightly atmospheric works after his break with Wagner. Naxos Japan
