Venetian music was at the forefront of European music and painting in the first half of the 16th century. The British vocal ensemble, known for its sophisticated interpretation of ancient music, produced this album for the Stuttgart State Art Museum in cooperation with the Southwest German Radio (SWR). The album was produced in conjunction with a special exhibition of works by the 15th and 16th century Venetian school of painting, centering on Vittore Carpaccio (c. 1465-1525/26), one of the most famous Venetian painters of the Renaissance, and published by Ottaviano Petrucci, an internationally renowned music editor in Venice during the same period. The program also includes works published by Ottaviano Petrucci, an internationally active score editor in Venice during the same period.The editors of the program include not only Italian composers from Venice and abroad, such as Tromboncino and the lute player Capirola, who are close to Carpaccio's generation, and Festa, who worked in the Papal court, but also composers from the Netherland, such as Josquin and Villalort, and French masters, such as Mouton and composers from the Balkans. The Marian Consort beautifully conveys the fascination of the craftsmanship of these brilliant composers as captured by Petrucci's broad vision, bringing elaborate polyphony to life through songs of naturalistic appearance. Christina Wott's virtuosic lute works accentuate the vocal-centered development and remind us of the relationship between vocal and instrumental music. (Naxos Japan)
