Description:

Fedrova Sings Rachmaninoff—Music That Resonates Precisely Because of These Challenging Times Hailing from Kyiv, Ukraine, Anna Fedrova—who won the 2009 Rubinstein International Piano Competition and has built a global career centered in the Netherlands—presents Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concertos No. 2 and No. 4. This is the second installment in her complete collection of Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos, following the first release (CCS42620), which featured the Piano Concerto No. 1 and the “Paganini Rhapsody.” Fedorova’s performance of the Second Concerto—a live recording from the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in 2013 that has garnered nearly 35 million views on YouTube—is being re-recorded for CD for the first time since 2014 (PIANOCLASSICS). Piano Concerto No. 2 was the work that helped Rachmaninoff—who had fallen into a mental crisis following the harsh criticism of his Symphony No. 1—recover and achieve great success. Here, Fedrova’s piano playing, which conveys dynamic expression within a slightly leisurely tempo, intertwines with the sweeping, undulating orchestra to fully bring out the work’s charm. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 4, completed nine years after he left his homeland of Russia in 1917 and subsequently revised twice more, is a somewhat complex work in which the influence of composers such as Scriabin has been noted. Here, too, Fedrova’s technique and expressiveness—combining power and delicacy—come to life. According to Fedrova, the Fourth Symphony represents “a major turning point in history—a farewell to the past and a plunge into a terrifying future,” , while the Second Symphony represents “a phoenix-like rebirth and spiritual resurrection—hope and light, which are precisely what we need right now.” Based on this interpretation, she arranged the album to feature the Fourth followed by the Second, resulting in a deeply moving album that strongly reflects her current state of mind and resonates deeply with listeners.
