Peter Jablonski’s third recording for ONDINE is a collection of piano works by the Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz Grazina Bacewicz received piano and violin instruction from an early age under her father, a musician. She enrolled at the Warsaw Conservatory in 1928 and, after graduating in 1932, went to study in Paris, where she studied composition under Nadia Boulanger at the École Normale de Musique. An accomplished violinist who served as concertmaster of the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, she left behind numerous works for violin, four symphonies, and piano pieces; however, until very recently, her works were virtually unknown outside of Poland. However, as Polish performers—led by Christian Zimmermann—have taken up her music one after another, attention has been drawn to her original compositional style, and in recent years, opportunities to hear her works have increased. On this album, Jabłonska performs Piano Sonatas Nos. 1 and 2, the “10 Concert Etudes” and “2 Etudes,” which showcase her dazzling technical prowess, , and the “Concert Krakowiak,” which makes effective use of Polish folk song motifs—a total of five works. Among these, the 1949 “Piano Sonata No. 1” stands out as a particularly carefully crafted collection, featuring an edition edited by Jablonski herself for publication by PWM (Polish Music Publishing House). The Japanese booklet included with the domestic edition features a Japanese translation of the liner notes by Anastasia Berina, who is working on the “Forgotten Women Composers” project at the BBC and the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
