The early music ensemble Concert de la Rouge, known for its numerous acclaimed recordings on the Aparte label—particularly its series of Haydn’s “Paris Symphonies”—has garnered attention by introducing a succession of lesser-known masterpieces from the same era. The accuracy of their Classical-era interpretations is evident from the steady stream of rave reviews these albums have received from the French music press. While their collaboration with a new generation of period instrument performers—such as Shushanne Shiranosian, Justin Taylor, and Tami Kraus—is certainly noteworthy, one cannot overlook the fact that founder and conductor Julien Chauvin also boasts exceptional skill as a period violinist. Having previously released a collection of 19th-century French opera arias titled *My Beloved...* (ALPHA445/NYCX-10063)—the ensemble, which has previously released recordings on ALPHA, will now regularly present key works by Mozart on the same label, and this album, with its impeccable program, marks the memorable first release in this series. Featuring performances on period instruments—including the “Jupiter” Symphony, one of the most celebrated works in Mozart’s orchestral repertoire—each piece is brought to life with astonishing freshness through interpretations that have been meticulously considered down to the finest detail. Their thorough understanding of the subtle musical language proves effective throughout. Yet, from the very opening the surging momentum of the *The Marriage of Figaro* Overture, the rich and overwhelming “dignity” of Chauvin’s performance in the violin concerto, and the exquisite balance between impeccable discipline and the individual musicians’ spontaneity—all of these elements lend this album a powerful presence that truly merits the title of a groundbreaking performance of a new era. The liner notes, which include numerous quotations from the composer’s own letters, are also fascinating.
