The sounds of gut strings intertwine with vocal melodies—the essence of late Italian Baroque, performed by local prodigies In the late Baroque period, Rome—the Eternal City—was home to numerous royalty, nobility, and high-ranking clergy known for their love of music. This program features a selection of masterpieces by Italy’s leading composers of that era, offering a thorough interpretation that captures the essence of early 18th-century music. This album is presented by the Vanvitelli Quartet, a group of rapidly rising young Italian musicians who draw on decades of experience in period instrument performance. The soloist is mezzo-soprano Giuseppina Bridelli, who delivered a magnificent performance in the 2019 aria collection *Showdown! Porpora vs. Handel* (Japanese edition NYCX-10055 / import edition A461)! Here, through a series of works in which the violin and cello solos take center stage, she masterfully interprets music with the intimate atmosphere that 18th-century Roman intellectuals would have experienced, weaving a harmonious ensemble that blends seamlessly with the continuo—including the lute and keyboard instruments.
