Born in the U.S. to English parents in 1927, Wilson soon moved to England with his parents and lived in Glasgow, where he studied music. He completed five symphonies during his lifetime, and the second symphony in this collection is important as the work that established his style of using modern techniques while maintaining a high level of artistry, with a pleasant sense of tension and precise composition. No. 5, his final work, was written at the request of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and is a single movement work that puts his symphonic technique into practice within the framework of a chamber orchestra. Rory MacDonald and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra follow their previous recording (CKD616) of Nos. 3 and 4 with a deeply sympathetic portrayal of the work of the "Father of Scottish Art Music.
