Weinberg was a Jewish composer born in Poland and active in Russia. Although he was forgotten for a time, the 21st century has seen a revival of his works, and many orchestral and chamber music works have been heard more and more. However, opera has not been performed as often as it should be. This opera "Congratulations! is based on the short story "Masel tov" by Sholem Aleichem, the author of "Fiddler on the Roof" and known as the "Jewish Mark Twain. Weinberg wrote this work in Yiddish about the relationship between a poor cook, Beylia, and a rich landlord, for the benefit of the Jewish community in Russia. Staupel says he has wanted to conduct this opera ever since he first heard it in 1983. Naxos Japan
