Description:
A new series by Friedhelm Flamme, known for his "Organ Works of North German Baroque Composers," is a collection of works by Buxtehude, who was born in Denmark but worked mainly in Lübeck. As organist at the Church of Our Lady of Lübeck for nearly 40 years, Buxtehude was known for his performances during morning and Sunday services, as well as for expanding the "Evening Music" concerts started by his predecessor, Tunder, to the delight of many audiences. His organ music, both chorale arrangements and free-form pieces, has survived in a total of about 40 pieces, and most of the free-form pieces are brilliant, consisting of five parts: beginning - first fugue - interlude - second fugue - conclusion. This album includes chorale preludes and chorale variations on Disc 1, and passacaglias and toccatas without foot keys on Disc 2. Flamme performs these works in Buxtehude's innovative style on the Grauchow Trotman-Orgel organ, rather than the Schnittger organ used in the previous series. Naxos Japan
