Toru Takemitsu enjoys overwhelming popularity and recognition among Japanese classical composers. This album, performed by Marin Orsop and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, features “Solitude Sonore,” composed in 1958 and inspired by Toshiro Mayuzumi’s “Symphony of Nirvana”; “A Bird Descends into a Star-Shaped Garden”—which gained great popularity even outside Japan thanks to its skillful use of the pentatonic scale—his representative work from the early 1980s, “Time of Dreams”; “Garden of Spirits,” created in 1994 and inspired by the Hida-Furukawa Festival and the town’s mystical atmosphere; and “Three Film Scores,” arranged for string ensemble and premiered the year before his death. Takemitsu’s works fuse the traditions of Western music with a delicate Japanese sensibility. Although his compositional style evolved from his early years to his later years, an unmistakable “Takemitsu sound” can be recognized in each piece, and his unique timbre continues to captivate performers and audiences around the world.
