Description:

Founded in 1900 as the "Vienna Performing Society Orchestra," the Vienna Symphony Orchestra boasts a long history of more than 100 years. The orchestra's first recording of Beethoven's complete symphonies was undertaken by Philippe Jordan, who was appointed Chief Conductor in 2014. anniversary year (250th anniversary of his birth), the complete cycle will finally be available in 2020. All of the pieces have been thoughtfully interpreted by Jordaan, and while adhering to tradition, the performances are based on the latest research. The following are excerpts from Jordaan's reflections on each piece. Jordan considers both Symphonies No. 1 and No. 3 to be innovative works, particularly No. 3's use of the "Promethean theme" in the last movement rather than the "Hero" title. He says that he played No. 3 from his own perspective, "I related various motives from the beginning of No. 1 so that the last movement of No. 3 would be the greatest climax of the piece. For Symphony No. 2, it is "Beethoven's most luminous, raw, joyful, and brilliant symphony," and for Symphony No. 7, "the rhythmic is given priority in No. 7, compared to No. 2, where the melodic is given priority." The following is a brief description of the symphony. He also focuses on the hidden dark character of Symphony No. 4, and says that this is why it is significant to combine it with Symphony No. 5 to deepen the understanding of the work. Symphony No. 6 is "the most colorful symphony with Schubertian elements," and its finale "already contains the 'all men are brothers' philosophy of No. 9." He points out. Of the relatively small and light Eighth Symphony, he wrote, "Everything is precisely on point here, and the entire symphony is highly virtuosic, full of wit and surprises in rhythm, in harmony, and in dynamics. This is a work of extraordinary compactness and brilliance. He also considers Symphony No. 3 "Hero" as a precursor of the Ninth Symphony, saying, "The first movement of the Ninth is dominated by Geist, the second movement by rhythm, and the third movement by melody. And the final movement synthesizes all of this in a huge variation style. There could be no better variation. Recorded in the rich acoustics of the Musikvereinsaal, these performances are full of ambition, utilizing the traditional sound of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, but with Jordan's new innovations in the details of intensity, phrasing, accents, and so on. There is always a new perspective in his playing, a new approach, and a new discovery. We hope you will enjoy this collection of symphonies with a rich expressive power, which is a "new image of Beethoven for a new age". Naxos Japan
