Karl Weigl was born in Austria. Although he came from an upper-class background and developed a close friendship with Schoenberg in his youth, he never embraced the twelve-tone technique himself. Instead, he carried on the compositional style of Mahler, who had influenced him in his youth, and remained true to a Romantic style throughout his life. He wielded considerable influence in the European music world until World War II, but because he was of Jewish descent, he was persecuted by the Nazi regime along with other artists labeled as “degenerate,” and the performance of his works was banned. He fled to the United States, where he spent a difficult later life and died in solitude. Although his works were long neglected, the “revival boom of degenerate music” that swept through the late 20th century brought his compositions back into the spotlight, and several of his works have since been performed and recorded. The “Cello Concerto” included on this album features a classical form that seems modeled after Brahms. That said, the piece still possesses a unique atmosphere and is filled with memorable melodies. In the “Two Pieces” dedicated to Toscanini, listeners can enjoy two contrasting works: a rich “Love Song” and a “Wild Dance” that employs special playing techniques. A highlight of this album is Wolfish’s passionate performance, as he energetically interprets works from this era. Naxos Japan
