Today, Boccherini is known only for that one lovely "Minuet". However, shortly after his death on May 28, 1805, journalists in Leipzig and Paris paid tribute to Boccherini as "an outstanding cellist capable of enchanting audiences with the incomparable sound of his instrument and expressive melodies," and "a brilliant cellist, he charmed us with his unparalleled expressiveness and singing. He was a great cellist, and he enchanted us with his unparalleled expressive singing. Boccherini was originally born in Italy and made his debut as a cellist at the age of 13. He then worked at the court of Vienna, but in 1769, at the age of 26, he was invited to Spain to become a musician in the service of Prince Don Luis, where he remained until the end of his life in Madrid. Although he is said to have lived a lonely last years, there is no doubt that he maintained a high reputation as a cellist, as the aforementioned eulogy suggests.The numerous string quintets that have survived are known especially for the cello, and the cello sonatas are no different, with cello melodies that are so beautiful and complete that only Boccherini could have written them, utilizing a range so wide as to be reminiscent of the violin.
