The clear chorus, the tremolo-drenched guitar tones floating through the reverb, and Mavis's beguiling, dignified bass voice resonate in the soul. In the late 1940s, guitarist/singer Roebuck "Pops" Staples formed the Staple Singers with his daughter Cleosa, Mavis, and son Purvis. His distinctive guitar style, which also shows influences from country blues, delta blues, hillbilly, and rockabilly, and the presence of Mavis, with her low, deep singing voice, were unique in the gospel world at the time. After the 1960s, he played an important role in the civil rights movement and began to sing songs with strong social messages, including "For What It's Worth" (M-2) by Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield), attempting a soul/rock approach. He also attempted to take a soul/rock approach to his work. This album is a collection of gems from their early years, selected from the Vee Jay, Riverside, and Epic periods before they later achieved worldwide success with Stax and Kartum, and filled with their unique vibrancy and virtuous voices.Their songs, which had a great influence on later soul/rock music, transcended the framework of gospel music to become a must-listen compilation album for all music fans!
