Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-1975)

Description:

The Execution of Stepan Razin," premiered in Moscow in 1964, tells the story of Stepan Razin, a Don Cossack leader who actually existed in the 1600s, and his failed attempt to rebel against the Russian government in order to realize his ideal "Cossack Country," and his capture and execution. Shostakovich (1886-1975), using chorus and baritone solo voice, masterfully portrays this tragic and derisive portrayal. The Suite "Zoya" is from 1944, music for a film about the tragedy of Zoya, an 18-year-old party member. The Suite on Finnish Themes was composed in 1939, but the complete score was missing until 2001, when it was finally discovered and premiered. The music is performed with great passion by Ashkenazy and a group of excellent vocalists. ---
