Through meticulous research, we discovered archival recordings held by the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. To commemorate the venue’s 25th anniversary, we will be releasing them on CD in a series. Since it is a relatively new concert hall in Japan, all the recordings are digital! It has long been noted that the hall’s clear acoustics lend themselves well to recording. Magalov was born in Leningrad but came from a family of Georgian nobility. He left Russia during the Russian Revolution and made a name for himself in Europe as the accompanist for the great violinist Szigeti. He married Szigeti’s daughter, becoming his son-in-law. As early as 1931, he made his first visit to Japan alongside Szigeti. He served as a professor at the Geneva Conservatory, succeeding his close friend Lipatti, and resided there until his death. Argerich was also one of his students. He was also a specialist who made the world’s first recordings of Chopin’s complete works. In 1991, the year before Magaloff’s death, his tour of Japan attracted significant attention, as it marked his first concert in Tokyo in over two decades. His diverse repertoire and the sheer number of pieces he performed are particularly noteworthy. He also played plenty of encores. Mozart and Scarlatti were among the first works Magaloff recorded. His Mozart was straightforward and unpretentious. That said, his masterful artistry as a veteran pianist ensured his performances were far from bland or uninspired. Listening to Magaloff play simple pieces really brings home just how much of a master of beautiful tone he was. His performance of Chopin’s Piano Sonata was cool and stylish, with a hard-boiled edge. And then there was “Pictures at an Exhibition.” When it comes to performing Mussorgsky, the Russian spirit Magaloff held deep within his heart explodes onto the stage. For Magaloff—known for his extremely fanatical and even ferocious style—this is an exceptional performance that stands apart from his usual repertoire. The encore, his favorite piece—"The Lark," a strongly Russian-flavored work arranged by Balakirev from a Glinka song—is also deeply moving. The finale is “Spinning Song” from Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words, which evokes a fresh sense of deep empathy. Tobu Land System
