On one hand, there was Hiroshi Suzuki, a trombonist in such high demand that people would say, “If you want to record a great album, secure his schedule.” On the other, there was Masahiko Togashi, a drummer who rose to prominence at a young age and took the jazz world by storm, from modern jazz to free jazz. The collision of these two distinct personalities and talents gave rise to a new trend in the Japanese jazz scene. From “Castle Cats,” which moves fluidly between jazz-rock and free jazz, to “Song of the Bells,” where Yuji Ohno’s piano weaves beautiful melodies amid the sound of bells ringing down like rain, and “Passion,” in which each musician cuts in with sharp precision—the entire album is brimming with creativity and passion. This album is considered to be the first recording of New Jazz and Free Jazz in Japan, released in 1969. It marked a turning point that propelled Japanese jazz forward. (C)RS
