Beethoven’s “Eroica” was previously released on CD by the Hunt label, but this edition is a reissue sourced from master recordings held by a broadcasting station. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 is making its debut on this format, marking the 13th recording of this work by Mravinsky. This performance of the “Eroica” is nothing short of electrifying. The muscular, utterly unadorned music surges forward with an unstoppable, tremendous momentum, making the 46 minutes fly by in the blink of an eye. Yet it remains meticulous down to the finest details, showcasing astonishing ensemble playing. A lustrous tone, a resilient rhythm, and music and energy that seem to expand endlessly. Even among the many renowned performances of the “Eroica,” it is rare to find one that is this thrilling. You can fully savor this dreamlike moment.
