A Rich Cultural Bridge Linking German and Polish Musical Traditions Tansman & Bruch, Performed by Vivian Hagner A collection of works by Tansman and Bruch, performed by the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra of Poland, led by Warsaw-born conductor Łukasz Borowicz, alongside Munich-born violinist Vivian Hagner. Born in Poland, Tansman was active in Paris during the interwar period. As a Jew, he was forced into exile in 1941. Even after returning to Paris after the war, he was unable to keep pace with avant-garde trends and gradually faded into obscurity. In recent years, however, his unique aesthetic and diverse body of work have once again attracted attention and are being reevaluated. This recording features two works—a large-scale violin concerto and the lighthearted and elegant “Five Pieces”—both composed with consummate skill. Then there is Max Bruch, a pillar of German Romanticism. Renowned for the beauty of his melodies and his romantic sound, his “Violin Concerto No. 1,” “Scottish Fantasy,” and “Kol Nidrei” are still frequently performed today. This album features the “Concertstück” and a violin version of “Kol Nidrei.” Although Bruch enjoyed a distinguished career during his lifetime, following his death, the rise of the Nazis led authorities to take issue with the Jewish themes in his works, including “Kol Nidrei,” and in 1935, all of his works were banned from performance. This album highlights the rich cultural ties linking the musical traditions of Germany and Poland, as well as the shared interest in Jewish heritage held by both composers. Through Vivian Hagner’s crystalline tone and keen musical insight, these works are rendered with emotional depth and precision, making this album an ideal opportunity to revisit these two outstanding composers and rediscover the beauty and breadth of their bodies of work.
