Description:

Abbado's Last Lucerne Festival 2013 Opening Concert Conductor Claudio Abbado sadly passed away on January 20, 2014 at the age of 80. The DVD and Blu-ray released by ACCENTUS MUSIC now includes the opening concert of the 2013 Lucerne Festival. The Lucerne Festival, which began with a concert on the shores of Lake Lucerne in 1938 conducted by Toscanini, celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2013. Abbado was appointed artistic director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, which was officially established in 2003, and although it is a temporary organization, it has brought together top-notch musicians and has given numerous masterful performances. The program of this concert, which marked the opening of the 2013 Lucerne Festival, Abbado's last appearance at the festival, was Brahms' "Tragic Overture" (changed from NONO's "Prometeo"), Schoenberg's "GRE Song" with soloist Mihoko Fujimura, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 "Heroes". From the opening Brahms, Abbado's performance was not "heavy" at all, but rather soft and warm with depth and songfulness. The "Gret Song" is Schoenberg's early large-scale orchestral work with soloists, narrators, and chorus that exceeds two hours in total. Here we have the interludes and the "Song of the Mountain Dove," with Mihoko Fujimura as soloist. Since his youth, Abbado has been fond of conducting music of the New Viennese Music School, and his recording of "Song of the Grez" with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1992 is known as a highly accomplished masterpiece, and in this performance, the unique style of the work is expressed with high quality. Also, the mystical voice of Mihoko Fujimura, who is well known for her operas by R. Strauss and Wagner, moved the audience as well as the orchestra. Then came the second half, Beethoven's "Hero. Under Abbado's careful and meticulous instructions, a moderate tension was maintained throughout, and the orchestra was made to sing well as the big, flowing music progressed. The slow tempo was played slowly and deliberately, and the strings and winds were never disturbed. This concert reminded us once again of the richness of Abbado's music, and we can foresee that he will shine even brighter as a great master of the 21st century in the future. King International
