March 5, 2023 is, the 70th anniversary of the death of Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953). A Russian composer, pianist, and conductor, he was part of the "West" after the Russian Revolution of 1917, traveling to the U.S. and France; he returned to his country, which became the Soviet Union in the late 1930s, and left masterpieces in many musical genres, and is considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century. His widely heard works include the ballet music "Romeo and Juliet," Peter and the Wolf, piano concertos, violin concertos, classical symphonies, the opera "War and Peace," symphonies, the film music "Alexander Nevsky" and "Ivan the Terrible" directed by Eisenstein, and piano sonatas. Prokofiev was born on April 27, 1891 in Sontsovka (now Donetsk Oblast) in the Russian Empire (now Ukraine). He studied music from an early age and showed exceptional talent. He began studying composition at age 10 with Laingolit Gurier and entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1904, where he studied piano, harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, and conducting, especially under Lyadov, Tcherepnin, and Rimsky-Korsakov He entered at age 13, a He was much younger than his classmates. After graduation, Prokofiev made a name for himself as an innovative composer and pianist, becoming famous for a series of ferociously dissonant and virtuoso works, including his first two piano concertos. in 1915, Prokofiev was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev of the Ballets Russes to write a ballet called With the "Scythian Suite," an orchestral arrangement of a piece he had composed for "Ara and Lolly," he decisively broke away from the usual category of pianist. Diaghilev commissioned Prokofiev to write three ballets ("The Clown," "The Steel Steps," and "The Prodigal Son"), all of which caused a sensation among critics and colleagues at the time of their premieres (Prokofiev continued to compose ballet music after this, and by the end of the 1930s, one of his most famous ballet pieces Romeo and Juliet", one of his most famous ballets, at the end of the 1930s). Other works composed during this period include the "Classical Symphony," "A Brief Vision" for piano, and the "Violin Concerto No. 1," considered one of the most beautiful of the 20th century.(1/2) Warner Music Japan
