Haydn (1732-1809)
Description:
A collection of cello concertos said to have been composed for Joseph Weigl and Anton Kraft, respectively, a master of cello concertos backed by gentle musicality. The "No. 1" is tight and powerful in a style that retains the baroque color. The "No. 2" expresses the masculine charm of the cello with the fullness of the matured style. Heinrich Schiff does not overstate his technique or his own musicality, but instead expresses calm and mature music. The lyrical beauty of the second movement of No. 1, backed by the gentle musicality of the first movement, is superb. Universal Music/IMS
