The saxophone and bandoneon were developed in the mid-19th century. The bandoneon was originally used in Germany as a substitute for the organ in religious music, but was brought by Germans to Buenos Aires, the heart of tango. There, it became central to tango performances. The saxophone was developed in Belgium and later made its way to the Americas. Please enjoy this collaboration between the saxophone—whose tone is perfectly suited for bringing the passionate world of tango to life—and the bandoneon, with its mastery of improvisation. Marco Albonetti, one of Italy’s leading saxophonists, received high praise for his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York and is active worldwide as a soloist and educator. He maintains a deep passion for Piazzolla’s music in particular; for his doctoral dissertation research, he traveled to Buenos Aires to examine the composer’s original scores and conducted interviews with Piazzolla’s wife, Laura Escalada, the poet Horacio Ferrer, musicians Pablo Sigrel and José Bragat to deepen his understanding of Piazzolla’s music; he previously released a collection of Piazzolla works (CHAN20220).
