Description:
February 3, 1945 Dresden Bombing Remembrance Concert, featuring Herreweghe During World War II, from February 13 to 15, 1945, Allied forces bombed Dresden indiscriminately. The city was reduced to ashes, and an estimated 25,000 to 60,000 civilians were killed. The Staatskapelle Dresden, the city's leading orchestra, performs at the annual memorial service for the victims, and in 2021 Philippe Herreweghe performed Bach's church cantata. Although the concert was held without an audience due to the Corona disaster, the fear of a worldwide pandemic also made this year's concert particularly memorable. The reason is that both cantatas No. 82 and No. 199 are solo cantatas with no chorus. This may be due to the social stance of the ensemble, but it is significant that Herreweghe, who started his career as a vocal ensemble member, dared to choose this form of work. Disc 2 features an interview with Herreweghe, as well as excerpts from his concerts in 2014, 1994, and 1995.
