Ennio Morricone, Italy’s preeminent and world-renowned film music maestro who composed the scores for over 500 feature films—including *Cinema Paradiso* and *The Pianist on the Ocean*—passed away on July 6, 2020 (local time). He was 91 years old. This Blu-ray release features a digitally restored recording of a concert Morricone performed in 2004 with the Munich Radio Orchestra at the Munich Philharmonie Gasteig. Born in Rome in 1928, Morricone became a leading figure in the music of so-called “Spaghetti Westerns” during the 1960s through his collaboration with director Sergio Leone on films such as *Once Upon a Time in America* and *The Good, the Bad and the Ugly*. In 1986, he composed the score for Roland Joffé’s *The Mission*, for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, In 1987, he made his Hollywood debut with *The Untouchables* and won a Grammy Award; shortly thereafter, in 1989, he skyrocketed to fame with the global blockbuster *Cinema Paradiso*. Directed by Morricone’s son, Giovanni Morricone, this concert features a moving production that looks back on Morricone’s career in film music by era, interspersed with scenes from his films—a must-see for any Morricone fan.
