Pavel Gomtsiakov, a master cellist representing the new generation of Russian cellists, whose talent was highly acclaimed by Dumay, Piris, and Gergiev. His second release on ONYX is a collection of cello sonatas by Myaskovsky, following the much-talked-about Haydn cello concerto collection (ONYX 4151) using a Stradivarius made in 1725, an instrument that is said to have belonged to King Luis I of Portugal and is still in obscurity. The two cello sonatas by Nikolai Myaskovsky (1881-1950) are little-known works despite their rich appeal, and their romantic and passionate beauty has been called worthy of replacing Rachmaninoff's famous sonatas. Written early and late in his career, respectively, the second was composed for Rostropovich and was a highly successful postwar work that was widely studied by Rostropovich's students. Tokyo M-Plus
