The Mariinsky Theatre's production of Wagner's "Die Walküre" conducted by Gergiev alone is enough to get people talking, but the singers are also absolutely gorgeous, and all of them are the best to sing this role today. Siegmund was sung by Jonas Kaufmann, the prince of the Helden tenors, who is at the peak of his popularity. Siegmund is his winning role along with Lohengrin. Sieglinde is Anja Kampe, one of the hottest young Wagner sopranos, who sang Zenta in "The Wandering Dutchman" at the New National Theater in March 2007 to great acclaim. She will sing this Sieglinde next year at the Bayreuth Festival in celebration of the bicentennial of her birth.Brunhilde is Nina Stemme (Stemme), one of the finest Wagner sopranos of our time. Brünnhilde sang "Die Walküre" at the opening of La Scala's 2010 / 2011 season under Barenboim with unprecedented success. In addition, Wotan is René Parpe, who has embarked on this role in recent years with great success. Fricka is played by Ekaterina Gubanova, a young mezzo born in Moscow, who has been very successful at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera. An all-star cast of this caliber is unlikely to be realized at Bayreuth, and even the MET, Vienna, and Royal Opera have not had such an all-star lineup in recent years. Gergiev balances his signature inamic expressiveness with intelligent control to give us a full Wagner performance that is unmistakably his own. An excellent recording from the Mariinsky's concert hall, not the theater, is now available on SACD hybrid.The project will go on to record the entire "Ring of the Nibelung" and will be completed in 2014, after the bicentennial of his birth in 2013.
