Description:

Experience the power of the music on film! Barenboim & Staatskapelle BerlinMahler's 9th Symphony 2009 live on Blu-ray for the first time and in a new jacket design! The DVD is also re-released with a new jacket design. Barenboim conducted the Staatskapelle Berlin in a performance of Mahler's Ninth Symphony at the Philharmonie in Berlin in April 2009. This performance was part of a series of Mahler symphony concerts that Barenboim and Boulez conducted with the Staatskapelle Berlin.Barenboim has completed major complete symphonic works by Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Bruckner, and Schumann during his long career, but it is somewhat surprising that he has recorded only four Mahler symphonies. Barenboim has recorded "Song of the Earth" live with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1991, Symphony No. 5 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1997, Symphony No. 7 with the Staatskapelle Berlin in 2005, and Symphony No. 9 with the Staatskapelle Berlin in 2006. In 2006, the Staatskapelle Berlin recorded Symphony No. 9 live with the Staatskapelle Berlin. Both recordings are equally rich in orchestral sound, and are characterized by the dramatic and powerful direction that is the hallmark of this conductor. The live performance of No. 9 recorded in November 2006, when Barenboim was intensively focusing on this work, is already well known for its intensity and passion, so it is no surprise that the music here, recorded two and a half years later at the same location as the Palmer, is equally, if not more, intense and dramatic. The music here is just as intense and dramatic, if not more so. The bonus track titled "The Mahler Project" includes a talk with Barenboim and Boulez about Mahler, as well as plenty of rehearsal footage that could be considered the making of the series. It is now a rare glimpse of Boulez. King International
