"The Abduction from the Seraglio" Set Barcelona Ablaze! This is footage of Mozart’s “The Abduction from the Seraglio,” performed at Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu in April 2010. Above all, Diana Damrau’s Constanze is the star of the show. As an artist of exceptional talent in both singing and acting—and aided by the direction—she delivers a wonderful portrayal of Konstanze that avoids falling into a stereotypical characterization. The blonde Olga Perechatsko is a young soprano from Russia. She is a prodigious talent who came of age at the Rossini Opera Festival and is already well-known among Rossini enthusiasts. In addition to her refined singing, she is quite a beauty. Belmonte is played by Christoph Strel, a German tenor who has been highly active in recent years as a Mozart tenor. Pedrillo is played by Norbert Ernst, a distinctive Viennese tenor. Osmin is portrayed by Franz Josef-Selig, a German bass who specializes in Baroque vocal music and Mozart, showcasing the depth of his experience as a veteran. Christoph Kvesht, who plays Selim, is a Berlin-born actor (incidentally, his father is the former renowned actor Hans Kvesht). He has performed the role of Selim on numerous occasions. As always, Ivor Bolton delivers a spirited Mozart. Christoph Loy’s direction reimagines the opera as a contemporary drama, freeing the characterizations from the stereotypical “Turkish” tropes. In particular, he gives Osmin a much greater presence. This is likely one of the finest productions of *The Abduction from the Seraglio* in recent years, a work for which various interpretive possibilities have been explored. King International
