Savard's Astoré Debut disc from the last years of Couperin's life, "Viols" (1728), the best of viol music, has been revived! This is Savard's Astoré debut disc (ES 9930/now out of print) from 1975, about 40 years ago. The legendary masterpiece is back again, recorded by Astre, a high-quality sound label with "oily recordings" that Tetsuo Nagaoka praised. This "Viols" (1728) is a work from the last years of Coupland's life. The year 1728 was also the year of the death of Marin Marais, who was considered one of the best viol players at the Court of Couperin, along with Folklé. It is interesting to note that he continued to play the bass de viol even in his later years, but it is also possible that Coupland was paying homage to a tradition that was already dying out at the time. The first suite consists of seven pieces, written in the French style, and has a nostalgic character.The chords in the gavotte movement, for example, are so beautiful that they make one shudder. The magnificent passacaille (or chaconne) in the finale is nothing short of magnificent. The second suite consists of four pieces, and this one is rather Italianate. The third piece, "Funeral," is a masterpiece filled with serene tension. The final piece, "The White Shirt," is an immaculate piece, requiring superb technique. Savard, and Copeman and Moretto's brilliant performance, is a must-see! Ton Koopman, born in 1944, and Ariane Moretto, born in 1944, both from the Basel Conservatory and still working in Paris as viola d'amoretto. The performance is full of tension and great performance together with Ton Koopman (born in 1942, so he was in his early 30s at that time) and Ariane Moretto (born in 1944, from Basel Conservatory, still teaching viola da gamba in Paris). This is a masterpiece that should be owned not only by fans of ancient music, but also by all. King International
