After Jerusalem, Istanbul! A crossroads of civilizations traveling through Savar and music! Dimitrije Cantemir (1673-1723), also featured in the album "East = West (1000-1600)," was the son of Constantine, Duke of Moldavia, a member of a great noble family. In Istanbul, where he lived from his mid-teens until he became Duke of Moldavia, he studied the history and languages of various countries (he spoke and wrote 11 languages), Oriental music theory, and wrote articles on Turkish music. He also devised his own notation and wrote numerous compositions, including his own. He succeeded his brother Antioff as Duke of Moldavia, but surrendered to the forces of Peter I who invaded Moldavia during the Battle of the Pluto River in 1711 (one phase of the Great Northern War (1700-21)), in which the Turks besieged the Russian army and won. He spent the second half of his life as a duke and court counselor in the Russian Empire.After moving to Moscow, he wrote a history of the Ottoman Empire in Latin, compiled an introduction to Turkish music in Romanian, and edited an introduction to the old court practices and folk traditions of Moldavia, and is known to posterity for his multifaceted scholarly interests, especially his contributions on Romanian music. Cantemir Oulu, the established name of the manuscript score, is the Turkish reading of Cantemir. The manuscript, titled "A Music Book in Written Notation," contains about 350 pieces of instrumental music, including about 40 of his own works, and is a valuable source of information on the Ottoman period. Esperion XXI, led by Savar, has taken the moment when, culturally and musically, the West and the East began to separate in terms of the homogeneity they had maintained until then, and through the city of Istanbul, has created a new world of music, with seven pieces from this manuscript, eight pieces of improvisation called Taksim, and other pieces from Sepharad and Armenian folklore that resonate in our souls today.
