The opera, Girls of the Golden West, is an opera in two acts with music by John Adams and a libretto by Peter Sellers. San Francisco Opera commissioned the work in collaboration with Dallas Opera, Netherlands National Opera, and Teatro La Fenice in Venice; it premiered at San Francisco Opera on November 21, 2017. Inspired by the 1851 /1852 letter of Louise Clapp, who lived for a year and a half in the Sierra mountain mining settlement of Rich Barr (now Diamondville, California) during the California gold rush of the early 1850s. Clapp published her letters under the pen name Dame Shirley. The script text is drawn from first-hand accounts by Mark Twain, newspaper articles, letters, diaries, original Gold Rush song lyrics, political speeches and slogans. Adams says, "It is a great honor for me to be able to put the authentic voices of these people to music, whether from letters, songs, or newspaper articles of the time." He wrote. Sellers, who also directed the opera, came up with the script while researching for a production of Giacomo Puccini's 1910 opera The Girl of the Golden West (based on David Belasco's 1905 play The Girl of the Golden West). Gold Rush Era.According to Sellers, "These true stories of the Forty-Niners (those who, following the discovery of gold in California, United States, in 1848, flooded California the following year, 1849, in search of gold) are overwhelming in their heroism, passion, and cruelty, and tell of racial conflict, glamorous and They tell a story of humorous exploitation, political struggle, and the struggle to build a new life and determine what it means." The recording features soprano Julia Block, who won a Grammy Award last year, and other singers who have performed in the opera since its premiere (with the exception of Daniela Mack as Joseph Segovia), and was recorded live in concert in January 2023, conducted for the first time by the composer himself, John Adams. This is a live recording of the performance. (Warner Music)
