The Mary Onettes

Description:

Hailing from Jönköping, THE MARYONETTES have been at the forefront of Sweden’s dream pop scene, blending influences from 1980s new wave and 1990s indie pop under the leadership of Philip Kstrom. With layers of guitar pop and synths reminiscent of The Smiths, The Cure, and Echo & The Bunnymen, the group has released a string of masterpieces since the 2000s, including *The Maryonettes*, *Islands*, *Hit the Waves*, and *Portico:*. Their fifth album, released in May 2025—more than a decade after their previous album *PORTICO:*—is structured around singles released in recent years, such as “TEARSTOANOCEAN,” “HURRICANEHEART,” “EYESOPEN,” and “WITHOUTTHISBODY.” Although positioned as a long-awaited new release, the sound design emphasizes reverb and the expansiveness of synths more than ever before, while the lyrics feature an increased number of vividly evocative phrases, conveying the band’s evolving sensibility. The album opens with "WDWHL," where sequences and synth bass create a sense of tension, followed by "HURRICANEHEART," where the rhythm section and guitar arpeggios heighten the sense of exhilaration, immediately establishing the coexistence of speed and melancholy that is characteristic of THE MARYONETTES. In "WITHOUTTHISBODY," where lyrics themed around physical sensation and the sense of existence resonate against a backdrop of string-like synths and subdued beats, and in "TEARSTOANOCEAN," where chord progressions and guitar phrases—true to the title—evoke the depths of the ocean, deeply reverberated guitars and layered choruses strongly emphasize the band’s signature cinematic scale. From the midpoint onward, "EYESOPEN"—featuring MAJAMILNER—showcases connections to the MAKTHAVERSKAN circle, while the interplay of synths and twin vocals evolves into a sound that simultaneously evokes the coldness of Nordic post-punk and the emotional intensity of indie rock. On "SLIDE," the beat slows slightly, and by carefully layering guitar and synth phrases, PHILIPEKSTROM’s pop sensibility in songwriting is brought to the forefront once again. From the latter half through tracks like "SWORN" and "STOPTHISMELODY," this is an album where the beauty of the melodies and the richness of the sound coexist throughout. THEMARYONETTES, who have been a cornerstone of Swedish indie/dream pop since the 2000s, reaffirm their standing with this album featuring their current vocals and sound—a release highly recommended for listeners who enjoy the work of THERADIODEPT. and M83.
