Trio Zimmermann cellist Portela performs sonatas and songs by Schumann and Brahms! This is a new "solo recital album" by Christian Portela, who also performs as a member of Trio Zimmermann. The album features cello and piano performances of "Sonatas" for violin and piano and "Songs" for song and piano by Mr. and Mrs. Schumann and Brahms. Christian Portela was born in Zurich, Switzerland. He studied with Heinrich Schiff in Salzburg and Vienna. He is known for his guest appearances as soloist with orchestras and for his chamber music with musicians including Gidon Kremer, Henning Klagelud, and Mitsuko Uchida. Schumann composed the D minor "Violin Sonata" in the fall of 1851, and it has been interpreted as a reminiscence of his youth. Brahms composed the third "Violin Sonata" in the summer of 1886 in the same key as Schumann's second sonata, with an impressive "Cavatina" second movement "Adagio" and a "Presto Agitato" fourth movement reminiscent of a "Tarantella".The "Interlude" and "Scherzo" from "Sonata in F. A. E.," composed by Schumann in one movement each with Albert Dietrich and Brahms and dedicated to Joseph Joachim. The first piece from "Five Romances for Low Voices" on a poem by Klaus Groth. All of the performances are based on Portela's version of the violin and song parts, which she adapted for cello. Portela and Kathryn Stott are frequent collaborators. They have collaborated frequently on Dvořák's "Silent Woods" (BISSA 1947), described by BBC Music Magazine as "a stream of irresistibly beautiful songs that linger in the listener's memory for weeks on end," as well as on Barber's (BIS SA 1827) and Honegger's He has also recorded the "Cello Sonata" (BIS SA 1617) by Barber and Honegger for the BIS label.
