A Collection of Works by Kalevi Aho This album features Kalevi Aho performed by Vanska—but not as a conductor; surprisingly, he appears as a clarinetist. While many conductors showcase their piano skills, it’s quite rare to hear them play the clarinet. Before making his breakthrough as a conductor, Vanska was a virtuoso who served as principal clarinetist of the Turku Philharmonic from 1971 to 1976 and the Helsinki Philharmonic from 1977 to 1987; he reportedly still practices regularly to this day. It’s only natural that, given that it’s a work by Aho, he would want to participate as a clarinetist as well—and his virtuosity is truly astonishing. He also demonstrates his first-rate skills as a chamber musician alongside members of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. King International
