The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra's 80th Anniversary Box with many rare sound recordings & a booklet full of treasured photos! Bernstein, Celibidacke, Cripps, R. Kubelik, Chaikon by Kondrashin Abbado & Stern in stereo! The orchestra has a diverse repertoire and a vast amount of recordings by distinguished conductors. In 1936, the Palestine Orchestra, the predecessor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, was born. The orchestra consisted of 75 Jewish musicians who came together at the urging of violinist Huberman. The inaugural concert was held on December 26, 1936, conducted by Toscanini. From 1940 to 1943, the orchestra toured with Huberman as soloist and made many other trips, changing its name to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra has performed with many distinguished conductors and has had the opportunity to record with a wide variety of soloists.Today, Zubin Mehta is the Music Director for Life (1981-). This box is full of fascinating sound sources. The conductors are superb, including Bernstein, Celibidacke, Cripps, and R. Kubelik. Kondrashin's tense Shostakovich is in 1980 stereo. Abbado and Stern's Violin Concerto, also recorded in mono in 1972, offers Stern's gorgeous technique and the ensemble with the orchestra to full advantage. The quality of the recordings of Stravinsky's own compositions and Schoenberg's piano concertos is a reflection of their time, but they are still valuable recordings.
