John Jubea was born in Cape Town and moved to England in 1944 after graduating from the South African College of Music. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he received numerous awards, and after becoming a British citizen, he actively engaged in composition, teaching in Hull and Birmingham and nurturing younger composers. Although he is best known especially for his choral works, he left behind a wide variety of symphonic works, operas, and chamber music. This album includes all of Joubert's solo piano works, which tend to remain relatively obscure among his oeuvre, including three sonatas and a work that quotes a theme from one of his own operas, all of which are orthodox works that make use of his skillful compositional techniques. Performed by Duncan Honeybourne, a pianist born in England in 1977 and highly regarded as a specialist in modern British and Irish music, the third piano sonata, composed in 2005, is dedicated to him.
