Description:

Featuring Dian Mei, Principal Viola of the Berlin Philharmonic! A collection of works by Ye Xiaogang, China’s foremost contemporary composer! Ye Xiaogang (1955–), who has served as President of the China Music Association, is a leading figure in the contemporary Chinese music scene. He is known for a compositional style that blends Chinese modes and pentatonic sounds with Western orchestration, drawing inspiration from nature, history, and personal memories. The four works on this album also depict China’s cultural identity through modern orchestral language, using motifs such as rural life, Jinggangshan—a sacred site of the revolution—the tragedy of Nanjing, and Hebei Province, a region rich in folklore. The title track, *The Backyard of the Village* (2019), vividly portrays the scenery of the plains near the composer’s hometown. It vividly expresses both the beautiful pastoral scenery and the coexistence of tranquility and excitement within Chinese society. *The Memories of Mount Jinggang* (2019), a work for viola and orchestra, portrays a warm tribute to the historical and symbolic significance of Mount Jinggang—the stage of the revolution—through lyrical and meditative music. *My Faraway Nanjing* (2005) is a one-movement cello concerto commemorating the victims of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre, while *The Loquat in Five Colors* (2024) is an overture inspired by the landscapes and legends of Hebei Province.
