Description:

This is the third live recording at Keystone Corner of Jackie Byard, the one and only world-class pianist in jazz history. This time, the recordings were made from August 9-12, 1979. Byard may not be the pianist most people think he is, but he joined the Mingus Band and worked with Eric Dolphy and Booker Ervin, and participated in their leadership. When you consider his collaboration with Roland Kirk, it is easy to imagine how free and creative a pianist Byard was. The press release issued by High Note describes Byard as "a pianist who embodied the past, present, and future of jazz," which is an apt description. Throughout his life, Bayard has mastered the art of playing with both tradition and innovation as key elements of his music. And in this work, too, such aesthetics of Bayard's are everywhere, and you can hear his wonderful piano playing. In particular, "Family Suite," which combines an elegant piano with free hitting keys and transitions into ragtime, is a performance of jazz history in a single piece! Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington's medley of classic tunes is simple yet elegant, and witty, with Middle Eastern melodies woven in to honor the masters who have traveled the world and turned their experiences into music. Although this is a live performance, it was recorded in high quality at the famous club "Keystone Corner," which has also released many live albums. Fred Hirsch respected Byard, who was also a mentor to Jason Moran and other modern geniuses. His achievements are immortalized!
