Vocalist/songwriter Madeline Peru celebrates 20 years since her debut with her first album for impulse! Hailed as the "Billie Holiday of the 21st century," it has been three years since Madeline Peru released her first original album, "Blue Room," in 2013. This ambitious album is a trio of funk, blues, and jazz with electric guitarist Jon Herington and upright bassist Barak Mori, who have been touring together for the past two years! Music is spiritual life for us. So music is a hymn to me, something very personal and introspective." So the songs she is working on include numbers by gospel singers Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Linton Lwesi Johnson, as well as songs by Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt, and Allen Toussaint, 19th-century composer Stephen Foster, and African-American composer Stephen Foster, and closing with African-American spirituals and traditional tunes. It all started with a concert in an old church in rural Oxfordshire, England. World-renowned French chef Raymond Blanc purchased an old manor house in Great Milton and converted it into a hotel for events and dining under the name Belmondre Manoir au Cattle Saison, and as part of the event, before dinner, a nearby 12th As part of the event, a concert was held before dinner in a nearby 12th century Norman-style church, to which Madeline's trio was invited last year. At sound check, I sang a Randy Newman song called "Guilty," and it sounded great, with a nice reverb on my voice from the wooden walls. Doug Dawson, the live engineer, said I should definitely record here." A few months later, Madeline secured the church for three days, one day for sound check, the second day for live recording with the townspeople, and the third day for additional recording. This is a remarkable work by a very organic trio that succeeds in incorporating a jazz sensibility into roots music.
