2011 marked the 40th anniversary of Keith Jarrett joining ECM! This two-disc set captures a solo live performance recorded in Brazil in April of that year. Keith had performed live in Brazil only once, back in the 1980s, and reportedly felt that previous experience had been “unfinished.” Just like the beloved classic *The Cologne Concert*, this is a deeply lyrical work, despite being entirely improvised. During the Rio de Janeiro performance, the music seemed to flow effortlessly, and Keith himself is convinced it ranks among his best. “I had absolutely no idea what this concert would mean, but it turned out to be the best. Everything I played here was improvisation, but this concert has become unforgettable. If it had been in another country, another hall, with another audience, or on another date, this work would never have been created. It was a miraculous night that can never be repeated. It had a beautiful structure—jazz-infused yet serious, at times sweet, at times passionate, energetic, warm, and playful—a well-crafted piece with no wasted movements. In a sense, it felt like a unique connection to Brazilian culture. “The acoustics in this hall were perfect, and the audience was enthusiastic and moved,” he said. A masterpiece worthy of this commemorative year—marking 40 years since his acclaimed piano solo debut on ECM, *Facing You*—has been born.
