This is the first big band work by the unique female composer/pianist Carla Bley in five years since her last album. This work pays homage to the glamorous, lively, and wonderful big bands of the 1950s when she was still a teenager, as well as to the great American songwriters. The 25-minute M3 "Appearing," recorded live at the New Morning club in Paris, where the Carla Bley Big Band regularly performs, recalls the Black Orchid jazz club in Monterey, where Carla first worked as a pianist at the age of 17. Nightly At The Black Orchid", made for the Monterey Jazz Festival, and the spirit of Gershwin, this is a powerful work full of Carla's unique sense of humor.
