A 72-year-old legendary tenor gave a performance of Schubert’s greatest song cycle, pouring his very soul into every note. “One tends to hesitate before attending a concert by an elderly musician. Especially in the case of a tenor, I found myself wondering—‘Is his voice still up to par?’ ‘Does he still live up to his former glory?’—as I tentatively made my way into the hall. Ernst Höfflinger’s *Winterreise*. It was a magnificent Schubert performance that completely dispelled all my mundane concerns. I bowed my head in reverence and listened intently to his single-minded spirit of inquiry, which reminded me of a master kendo instructor (September 8, 1991 / Tokyo Casals Hall). [From the liner notes by Masashi Isoyama] This is a live recording from the 1991 Japan tour by the renowned tenor Ernst Höfflinger.
