Three landmark early works recorded by Reich for DG in 1974, restored complete with the composer's own notes from the first release. Newly transferred for this edition from the original master tapes held in Germany. This two-disc set brings together the recordings Reich made for DG in January 1974, at the age of 37, at the Polydor Studios in Hamburg. Their appearance on LP that same year caused something of a stir. In the CD era, when the recordings were reissued domestically in Japan in 1993 as part of a 20th-century music series, the booklet carried - in addition to a newly written introduction - Reich's own notes on the works from the original release, together with his important text "Music as a Gradual Process", which had appeared in the November 1978 issue of the monthly magazine Epistēmē, launched by Asahi Shuppansha in 1975. This is the first Japanese reissue since then. All of the above texts are included; the jacket reproduces the original LP artwork, and the reverse of the booklet reproduces the LP's back cover in colour. The sound has also been newly transferred at high bit rate and high sampling from the original analogue master tapes held in Germany, so that the release comes as close as possible to the state of the original issue. Tower Records' own 2015 edition placed two of the works (excluding Drumming) on a single disc together with Variations for Winds, Strings and Keyboard conducted by Edo de Waart (PROC-1794); this time we restore the original format, adding Drumming and presenting all three works on two CDs. Composed in the early 1970s, these three pieces occupy an important place among Reich's early works, and he subsequently re-recorded Drumming and Six Pianos (as Six Marimbas) for the Nonesuch label. With private tapes from 1972 also having appeared on CD, these scores continue to attract attention today. For this reissue we went back to the original analogue master tapes held in Germany and carried out a new high-bit, high-sampling digital transfer (192kHz/24bit). The original jacket design has also been retained. Vintage+plus Vol. 28 comprises seven titles in all.
