Description:
The Dutch Hans van Maanen (1932-), winner of the Erasmus and Benoit prizes, is a world-renowned choreographer. To commemorate the 85th anniversary of his birth, a special program, "An Evening with Hans van Maanen," was presented by the Dutch National Ballet in Montpellier, France, in 2017. Often referred to as "the Mondrian of ballet," Maanen is a bridge between classical ballet and contemporary dance, and has choreographed more than 150 unique abstract ballet works over the past half century that focus on the subtle relationships between men and women (heterosexual and homosexual). In this commemorative performance, the Dutch National Ballet is represented by outstanding performances by Igone de Jong, Daniel Camargo, and others. The three works included were, in turn, created by Maanen in his 30s, 40s, and 70s. These are choreographies that are consistently simple in composition and form, yet offer a bird's-eye view of the world of Maanen's Butoh dance, rich in interactivity with music, which evolves and generates in the passage of time.In addition, the accompanying "Moving to Music," featuring interviews with Maanen and his artistic allies by Lerner Moritz, a leading music and performing arts documentary filmmaker, is a must-see for Maanen fans and ballet dance fans alike, as it delves into the secrets of Maanen's creativity. This documentary film is a must-see for ballet and dance fans alike. Naxos Japan
