The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of the great composer Beethoven. Although all of his works seem to be heard on a daily basis, this is not the case. The numerous "Variations for Piano" on this album are also rarely performed. Several of the pieces use melodies from popular operas of the time in which he was active as their themes. The lilting melodies of Paisiello, Vinter, Grétry, and others become astonishingly large works in Beethoven's hands. The Variations on "Come, Lovers" by Liggini, who was court music director in Mainz, is a powerful work consisting of 24 variations, composed in 1790 at the urging of Beethoven's childhood friend Wegeler. The second movement is a sketch of the first movement, and the third movement is a sketch of the second movement. The Sonata, of which only two movements remain as sketches, and two lovely waltzes are also short but charming works. This is a disc that will help you discover a hidden side of Beethoven.
