When it comes to Saint-Saens' piano concertos, the ones you hear most often are No. 5, "Egyptian Style," and No. 2. However, the other three pieces are rarely featured in concerts and are not so prominent among his works. However, the five concertos written over a period of almost 40 years, beginning with No. 1, which was composed at the age of 29, shortly after his attempt to win the Prix de Rome (unfortunately he did not win), are extremely important works that allow us to witness not only the evolution of Saint-Saens's style, but also the evolution of the French piano concerto. The first concerto does not yet display a strong individuality, but it is a rewarding piece, colored with gorgeous technique, as Saint-Saens was a gifted pianist from an early age. Ten years later, the Second Symphony is a masterpiece that, despite being completed in less than three weeks, boasts a wonderful performance full of passion and lyricism. Backed by Sustro and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, who have completed the complete symphony series, the French virtuoso Descharmes gives a wonderful performance. Naxos Japan
