Kalaev (1918-1982) was born in Baku, Azerbaijan. He studied under Shostakovich at the Moscow Conservatory, and his previously released Symphony No. 3 (8.570720) was also a hit for its colorful orchestration. This album contains two of his ballet pieces. The music is even more delightful and bewitching. The Seven Beauties" is based on a poem by the 12th century poet Nizami, which tells the story of a legendary king who had seven wives. The excitement leading up to the appearance of the beauties and their introductions is followed by a variety of beautiful women. Each piece is exotic and passionate. They are portraits by sound. The Way of Thunder is dedicated to the memory of Prokofiev, and this one was inspired by a novel by South African writer P. Abrahams. The motif of the work is racial strife and love, and the characteristic African rhozm is also used to great effect.The music is tragic yet vibrant. Naxos Japan
