Das Himmelskleid" is an opera by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, first performed in Munich in 1927 under the direction of Hans Knappertsbusch. Based on Charles Perrault's fairy tale "The Skin of a Donkey," it is a great work depicting the "growth of the human soul" in which an arrogant young princess, after suffering the loss of everything including her possessions and love, realizes her own shortcomings before death and learns that the "heavenly robe" she has been searching for was originally worn. Perhaps because it was the first romantic work by Wolf-Ferrari, who had previously been noted for his comedies, the audience response and critical acclaim were mixed, and the production was not a great success. In 1995, the Hagen Opera, which has a reputation for rediscovering forgotten works, staged a revival of "Heavenly Clothes.
